BridgeWave's Flex4G family of multi-gigabit millimeter wave wireless solutions have been designed to alleviate the strain of backhaul connections by combining advanced radio and modem capabilities with carrier-grade Ethernet features at the lowest Total Cost of Ownership.

Flex4G is a revolutionary new millimeter wave solution that was designed specifically for LTE mobile backhaul. Flex4G provides the carrier-grade feature sets demanded by next generation mobile operators in a "green" all-outdoor package. Features such as future-proof multi-gigabit capacity, advanced Ethernet switch capabilities and spectral efficiency at the longest distances, give operators the flexibility and scalability to not only adapt to changing network requirements, but to grow as their network expands. What makes this possible is the marriage of sophisticated Silicon Germanium RF integrated circuits along with BridgeWave's advanced modem and digital signal processing technology.

Combining spectral efficiency, longest link distances and reliability

Setting a new standard in spectral efficiency and performance, BridgeWave's advanced digital signal processing techniques used in Flex4G provide line-rate, full-duplex 1Gbps in an industry-standard 250 MHz channel. While other solutions use 64QAM to achieve this, Flex4G uses only 32QAM. The benefit of using 32QAM here is improved link budget. Longer distances and better availability are achieved with Flex4G over solutions using 64QAM.

BridgeWave SiGe compared to US Quarter Flex4G's exclusive Silicon Germanium technology enables high power operation, while the extraordinary level of silicon integration reduces the number of components in the system. This yields exceptional reliability and very high MTBF compared to solutions using discrete components.

Flex4G provides Automatic Transmit Power Control and Hitless Adaptive Modulation to ensure maximum system availability for all traffic and protected throughput for the highest value traffic on the network.


Future-proof backhaul for next-generation LTE networks

The multi-gigabit capabilities of Flex4G mean that operators can maximize the return on their investment in backhaul solutions while minimizing TCO. Further enabling future-proof transport, Flex4G provides multiple user interface types, with Ethernet, SONET/SDH and CPRI interfaces, allowing operators the flexibility in provisioning links across multiple network topologies.

Carrier class backhaul for carriers

Complementing the carrier-grade RF features of Flex4G, Carrier Ethernet services are provided through the use of an integrated low-latency switch supporting jumbo frames. Flex4G evolves into a Service Aware platform that allows different end-user-services data flows to be treated according to their QoS requirements. Classification is managed in a highly flexible portfolio of Ethernet criteria, and an advanced eight queue scheduling mechanism supporting Strict Priority and Shaped Deficit Weighted Round Robin which allows the network manager to plan ahead for high priority services and jitter sensitive applications. Flex4G supports Q-in-Q, allowing users to manage their VLANs when being transported inside a service providers' VLAN.

Flex4G incorporates Ethernet Operation, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM) functionality in the form of Link OAM (802.3ah), Service OAM (802.1ag) and Performance Monitoring (Y.1731). This provides network operators automated end-to-end management and monitoring of their network with the ability to validate connections, detect faults and alarms, perform loopbacks, and monitor link performance. Flex4G's Ethernet OAM facilitates efficient fault isolation and circuit restoral, reducing expensive truck rolls and lowering maintenance costs.

Flex4G provides comprehensive timing support required for 4G deployments, including Synchronous Ethernet per G.8261, G.8282 and G.8264 as well as IEEE1588v2 with Transparent, Boundary and Ordinary clock support.

With ultra-low power consumption and PoE capability, Flex4G provides all of the above in an environmentally friendly, compact and lightweight, zero-footprint all-outdoor solution.


Flex4G includes several key capabilities required by operators for cost-effective backhaul of 4G/LTE traffic:

  • 70/80 GHz Operation - Flex4G operates in the lightly-licensed 80 GHz spectrum where licensing costs are a fraction of their microwave counterparts, keeping OPEX costs low.
  • High Performance SiGe RF - Flex4G utilizes highly integrated Silicon Germanium technology that provides performance on-par with Gallium Arsenide (GaAs), but with fewer components for lower cost and higher reliability.
  • Efficient Spectrum Use - Flex4G provides 1.25 Gbps in a 250 MHz channel, or 2.5 Gbps in a 500 MHz channel using just 32QAM modulation for improved spectral efficiency without the cost penalty of distance compared to other solutions using higher order modulation.
  • Scalable, Future-proof Backhaul - Flex4G provides simultaneous transmission of SONET/SDH payloads and gigabit Ethernet streams over a single RF carrier. CPRI interfaces are also available allowing Flex4G to extend native connectivity between REC and RE elements.
  • Advanced Carrier Ethernet - Flex4G provides the Carrier Ethernet features operators require for backhaul of 4G/LTE traffic that includes Quality of Service (QoS), VLAN, and Provider Bridging (Q-in-Q) along with advanced management capabilities with Ethernet OAM and Synchronous Ethernet timing support.
  • Green Design - with ultra-low power consumption and PoE capability, Flex4G provides carrier-grade functionality in an environmentally friendly, compact and lightweight, all-outdoor solution.
